If
you or your child have ears that are prominent, protrusive
or deformed, then perhaps you should consider ear surgery
(otoplasty).
Otoplasty can be performed with sedation or general anesthesia
depending on the age of the patient. All surgeries are
done on an outpatient basis. Usually the surgery
involves recontouring the ear cartilage and repositioning
the ear closer to the head. Incisions are located
behind the ear and heal very well.
Pain is mild and we protect the ears with a bulky wrapping for
about a week. After that, the ears should be protected
from injury for about 4-6 weeks. Children will miss
about a week of school and 6-8 weeks of gym class.
Since
the ear stops growing about age 4, the surgery can be
planned anytime thereafter. Children start being
ridiculed and teased when they start school. Commonly
surgery is planned for a 6-8 year old, at the parents' and
child's discretion.
If you have any questions regarding otoplasty please contact
our office.
